Obituary for Mary M. (Penny) Buchner

Mary M. (Penny) Buchner
Mary M. Buchner (nee Penny Walling Torchia), 76, passed away on March 9, 2018. She was born in South Belmar (now Lake Como), grew up on the Jersey Shore, and graduated from Asbury Park High School and Monmouth University. Penny was an educator for over 30 years in the Red Bank school system where she taught kindergarten, established the pre-school program, and served as the Early Childhood Coordinator. She taught adult school, English as a Second Language and G.E.D in night school, also in Red Bank. After retiring in 2004, she enjoyed working in some small boutiques. She loved serving at The Center in Asbury Park where she volunteered each week.

Penny was a long-time member of the Tower Hill First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank where she served as a deacon and taught in both the Tower Hill School and in the church Sunday School program. She was a kind and giving person who was loved throughout the community. Also known for standing up for the least advantaged, she was always eager to lend a hand to those in need.

Penny was never one to sit still. Traveling was one of her great passions. She and her husband Mal traveled to some of the world's most fascinating destinations, including Tibet, the Orkney Islands, Morocco, Iceland, Turkey and Sicily to name a few. When at home, her true love was to enjoy her whole family and attend just about every grandchildren's event that would fit into her crazy schedule.

She was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and Roy Walling, and is survived by her brother and wife, Gerri and Leroy Walling; her husband, Mal Buchner; three sons, Kevin, Keith and Karl Torchia; a daughter-in-law, Sue Torchia; two step-daughters, Jennifer Siegel and Meredith McCambridge; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 24 at 11:00 am at Tower Hill The First Presbyterian Church, 255 Harding Road, Red Bank, NJ 07701. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Donations may be made in Penny's memory to The First Presbyterian Church. The family invites you to leave a condolence, light a memorial candle or make a memorial donation by selecting the appropriate tab.
