Michael Ioli of Oakhurst, NJ passed away on August 7, 2018 at the age of 72 with his beloved wife of 48 years, Maryanne, by his side.

Michael was born in Weehawken, NJ on May 18, 1946 to Ann and Larry Ioli. He graduated from Ridgefield Park High School in 1964 and soon after joined the military, completing basic training at Fort Dix, NJ. He graduated from Military Police Academy in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The 127th MP Company was formed at Fort Gordon, Georgia and was deployed to Qui Nhon, Vietnam in November, 1966.

He served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967 as a Military Police Officer. Following his passion for music and playing drums, the Electrical Banana was formed with his band mates. When not on patrol, the Electrical Banana played in NCO and Officer’s Clubs. It was the first 60’s rock band in Vietnam. Their experiences are immortalized in the book, Rock n’ Roll Soldier, A Memoir.

After completing his tour, Michael was stationed at Fort Monmouth, NJ where he met the love of his life, Maryanne. They were married on June 7, 1970, and shortly afterwards, he graduated from Montclair State University. Together they raised their 2 girls, Lori and Joanne, in Oakhurst, NJ.

Michael was dedicated to his family and community. He was an avid lover of photography. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Jerome Holy Name Society, PTA President at St. Jerome School and Red Bank Catholic High School, member of Alpha Sigma Mu at Montclair State University, Treasurer of the 127th Military Police Alumni Association, member of the Disabled American Veterans Association, and volunteered at the NJ Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial as a tour guide.

Michael was employed by the United States Postal Service for 35 years, serving as Post Master of Brielle, Morganville and Oakhurst post offices. He was also a member of the 077 Post Masters Association.

Michael was predeceased by both parents, Ann Esposito Ioli and Larry Ioli, father in law Joseph Marotta, and granddaughter Carmela De Leonardis. He is survived by his wife Maryanne Marotta Ioli, daughter Lori Ioli De Leonardis and her husband Raffaele De Leonardis, daughter Joanne Ioli Dunn and her husband Alexander Dunn, grandchildren Clementina, Michael, Angelo and Lidia De Leonardis, Juliet and William Dunn, sisters Loreta Ioli Amara and her husband Joseph Amara, Valerie Ioli Simpson and her husband Kenneth Simpson, and the many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends that loved him.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 13 from 4 -8 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave in Long Branch. Funeral Tuesday; 9:30 am at the funeral home followed by a 10:30 am Mass at St. Jerome Church, West Long Branch. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery in Oceanport.
